Thoughts from the Driver’s Seat with Mike Nelson

The Safety Benefits of ADAS

IIHS-HLDI dedicates an entire topic page on its website to “advanced driver assistance,” noting that “advanced crash avoidance features are becoming widespread. Many of today’s vehicles have technologies that monitor driver input and the environment around the vehicle and warn the driver when they detect the possibility of a crash. They may automatically brake or steer the vehicle if the driver does not act to avoid the collision.” Scroll down the page and you’ll find detailed descriptions and safety statistics for some of the most prevalent advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) on today’s cars. One statistic that always stands out to us, for example, is from an Institute study that “found that systems with forward collision warning and automatic braking cut rear-end crashes in half, while forward collision warning alone reduces them by 27 percent.” With statistics like that, it is hard to deny that ADAS can offer tremendous safety benefits.

Of course, some cars on the road will never have ADAS features—like partner Mike Nelson’s 1997 Mazda Miata (Zoom Zoom). Today Mike comes to you from the driver’s seat of that Miata, with his thoughts on ADAS as safety features.
